Westfield Steel Contributes to Teaching Kids
Westfield Steel recently hosted a group of high school students from the Sheridan Youth Assistance Program (SYAP). SYAP teamed up with local businesses so that its students could learn about future career opportunities in different business sectors through its Summer Youth Employment Program. Westfield Steel was one of twelve organizations that contributed to this hands-on program.
On July 13, Westfield Steel hosted ten students at its main plant in Westfield, Indiana. Team Members Abby Olson, Kelvin Thompkins, Bill Boerger, Jon DeaKyne, Carla Dorfmeyer, and Lance Groves instructed the students on safety, sales, operations, welding, service center distribution, and quality.
Lance Groves, Production Control Manager, enjoyed the day stating, “I enjoyed hosting the students for a fun afternoon tour of our facility. Getting to show them a firsthand perspective of a steel service center and how infrastructure is started was a joy and from the look on some of the students’ faces they also had a good experience. Maybe soon I will get to see them again on their first day of work.”
“The students were engaged and participated well in the tour. In the short time they were with us, I feel we were able to give them a well-rounded perspective on how we function as a business and a contributor within our community. They asked great questions throughout, and I welcome the opportunity to have additional students in our facility in the future.”
